Troubleshooting
YouTube opens but videos won’t play on TV
If YouTube opens on your TV but a video will not play, first try a different video and another app. That tells you whether the problem follows one title, YouTube, or the TV’s connection. Update or restart the app only after that quick comparison; menu paths vary by TV and streaming device.

Find out whether one video, YouTube, or the TV is failing
A video error in one title can have a different cause from a YouTube app that closes or a TV that has lost internet. YouTube and YouTube TV are separate services with different troubleshooting instructions. Start with comparisons before changing settings.
Play a second video in YouTube, then open a different streaming app.
If only one video fails, the issue may be with that title or its availability. If every YouTube video fails but another app works, focus on YouTube. If several apps fail, check the TV or network.
If that does not help: If you cannot compare services, note the exact error and whether the YouTube home screen loads.
Check another device on the same home network, if one is available.
If YouTube also fails on another device, a service or network issue becomes more plausible. If it works elsewhere, focus on the TV app or TV software.
If that does not help: Do not change router settings based only on one failed playback attempt; record which device and app failed.
Check the official YouTube or provider status/help page for a current service notice.
A reported service interruption can explain failures across otherwise working devices.
If that does not help: If there is no notice, continue with the TV app and network checks; no notice does not prove the service is healthy.
Restart the app and check for updates
YouTube’s TV troubleshooting recommends power-cycling the device and checking for app updates. Roku’s support also recommends checking for a channel update when an app will not open or crashes. Apply menu directions only to the platform named by the source; Android TV, Google TV, Fire OS, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Roku and VIDAA do not share one settings path.
Close YouTube fully if your device provides an app-close option, then open it again.
If the failure was a temporary app state, playback may resume.
If that does not help: If the app immediately closes or the same error returns, move to the device restart.
Use the TV or streaming device’s documented restart option. If the maker instructs you to unplug it, follow its timing and power instructions.
A restart can clear a temporary device state without deleting saved accounts.
If that does not help: If the device is installing an update, do not interrupt it; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check for a YouTube app/channel update and a TV system update using the platform’s own support instructions.
An available update may address a known app or software issue.
If that does not help: If no update is offered or playback still fails, note the model, software version, app version if shown, and exact error for support.
If the video buffers, stops, or shows a connection error
Test whether other apps can stream and whether another device can use the same network. A connected TV can still have a weak or interrupted path to a particular service. YouTube’s general playback guidance recommends checking the internet connection and playback quality; do not assume that a speed test alone proves the TV-to-service route is healthy.
Try a different video quality if the player offers that setting, and pause briefly before resuming.
If lower quality plays more reliably, available bandwidth or interference may be contributing.
If that does not help: If the same error appears at every quality, restore your preferred setting and compare another app.
Check whether another TV app streams on the same device and whether a phone or computer works on the same Wi-Fi.
If all devices struggle, investigate the shared network or provider. If only YouTube on the TV fails, focus on the app or device maker.
If that does not help: For broader connection symptoms, use the linked network guide rather than repeating app resets.
When to clear data, reinstall, or contact support
If your platform documents clearing an app cache, try that before clearing app data. Clearing data or reinstalling can sign you out, remove downloaded items, or reset app preferences. The effects vary by service and device, so read the on-screen warning. If only YouTube fails after restart and updates, contact YouTube support; if several apps fail on one TV, contact the TV manufacturer.
What to do next
Test another video first, then separate a title restriction from a service, app, or network problem; keep resets as a last resort.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does YouTube open but not play a video on my TV?
- The app can load its interface while playback fails because of a title restriction, service issue, network path, app state or device software. Try another video, another app and another device to narrow the cause.
- Is YouTube TV the same as YouTube?
- No. YouTube TV is a separate live-TV service with its own account, location and playback troubleshooting. Check which app you are using before following service-specific steps.
- Should I factory-reset my TV if YouTube will not play?
- Usually not as an early step. Compare other apps and devices, restart and update the app/device, then follow the manufacturer’s guidance. A factory reset may erase accounts, apps and settings.
