Troubleshooting

Netflix will not open on a smart TV

If Netflix opens and immediately closes, returns to the TV menu or stops at its logo, first check whether another TV app can connect. Netflix’s Smart TV guidance says a crash or close can mean the device’s stored app data needs refreshing; a network-wide problem or a single bad programme needs a different route.

This article focuses on launch and crash behavior. If Netflix opens but a title buffers or freezes, use the service’s separate loading/playback guidance instead of treating every symptom as an app that will not open.

Published by TV Remotely · Source checked 2026-10-24. Model and firmware behavior can differ; device tests are named only where performed.

Identify whether Netflix crashes, loads or loses the network

  1. Open a second streaming app that normally uses the internet, then return to Netflix and note exactly what happens.

If the second app works while Netflix closes, the failure is more likely limited to Netflix or its account/session. If several apps fail, check the TV’s internet connection first.

If that does not help: If no second app is available, run the TV’s network test or verify that another device can browse on the same Wi-Fi.

  2. Write down any Netflix error code and whether the app returns to the home screen, stays on a loading screen or freezes the whole TV.

A crash that returns to the menu matches Netflix’s crash guidance; a title that loads forever is a different symptom with different help steps.

If that does not help: If the TV itself stops responding, use the television manufacturer’s frozen-device guidance rather than repeatedly launching Netflix.

This comparison prevents a common dead end: changing Wi-Fi settings when other apps work, or reinstalling Netflix when the TV has lost internet across every service. A working app does not prove Netflix’s servers or account are healthy, but it does make a whole-home outage less likely.

Fully restart the TV, not just the app

  1. Turn off the TV and make sure it has fully powered down. If its power cable is accessible, unplug it for 15 seconds, reconnect it and start the TV.

Netflix recommends this complete restart sequence for Smart TVs when the app crashes or closes.

If that does not help: If the TV enters standby rather than shutting down, follow the manufacturer’s full restart instructions for the model.

  2. After the TV restarts, open Netflix once and wait for its normal sign-in or home screen before repeatedly pressing buttons.

If stored app state was temporarily stuck, a clean startup may let the app open again.

If that does not help: If Netflix closes again, record the error and move to the session and update checks instead of repeating the power cycle.

  3. If Netflix stays open long enough to reach its menu, use the app’s own supported sign-out option, then sign in again.

This refreshes the account session without resetting the entire television.

If that does not help: If the app closes before you can reach its menu or your layout has different options, do not enter undocumented remote-button sequences.

The 15-second step belongs to Netflix’s published Smart TV instructions. It is not a universal power-reset recipe for every television fault, and it should not require pulling a wall-mounted TV or reaching an unsafe power connection.

Check for updates using the TV’s own support instructions

If the app still closes, check the TV’s official app store for a Netflix update and the manufacturer’s support page for TV software updates. The available menus and whether the app can be removed differ by platform and model, so follow only the procedure for your exact device and platform.

  1. Install an update only through the TV’s normal update feature or its official app store, then reopen Netflix.

If the issue was addressed by an available app or TV update, the app should stay open to its sign-in or profile screen.

If that does not help: If no update is offered or the app still closes, note the software version and contact Netflix or the TV maker with the error code.

  2. If the TV maker’s instructions offer a supported remove-and-reinstall path for Netflix, read the warning and confirm you know your account credentials first.

On models that support it, reinstalling can refresh the app package; it may also sign you out or remove app data.

If that does not help: If Netflix is built in or cannot be removed on your model, do not attempt unofficial workarounds. Ask the manufacturer which supported recovery step applies.

If other apps also fail, check the TV’s connection

When multiple apps cannot reach their services, compare another device on the same home network and run the TV’s connection test if available. If other devices also have no internet, investigate the router or provider. If only the TV is offline, troubleshoot its saved network using the manufacturer’s instructions. A Netflix error that mentions the network is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove the Wi-Fi signal is the cause.

If Netflix alone fails while other TV apps work, avoid resetting the router as a first move. Check Netflix’s current service/help information, preserve the error code and continue with app-specific support.

Do not factory-reset the TV without a reason

A reset is not a safe shortcut for finding out whether the problem is the Netflix app, the TV software, the account or the internet connection. The checks above preserve that distinction and give support a useful history.

Give support the details that narrow the issue

Contact Netflix if the app alone crashes while other TV apps work; include the exact code and whether you could reach the sign-out menu. Contact the TV manufacturer if the television freezes, several apps fail, or the supported update/reinstall path is unavailable. Include the TV brand and model, software version, when the failure began, whether other devices can use the same network, and which steps changed the behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Netflix open and then close on my TV?
Netflix says a Smart TV app that crashes or closes may need its stored data refreshed. Try its documented full TV restart first, then sign out and back in if the app stays open long enough.
Netflix will not open, but other apps work. Is Wi-Fi the problem?
A whole-TV network fault is less likely if other apps work, though that does not rule out a Netflix service or account issue. Record any Netflix error and follow app-specific support before changing router settings.
Can I uninstall Netflix from every smart TV?
No. App removal options vary by TV platform and model. Use the manufacturer’s official instructions and do not attempt an unsupported workaround if Netflix is built in.
Should I factory-reset my TV to fix Netflix?
Not as a first step. A full reset may erase apps and settings. Use it only when the TV maker or Netflix support recommends it for your exact model.
