Older TV compatibility
Using a phone remote with an older Android TV
An older Android TV can be online and still fail to pair with a modern phone remote. TV Remotely implements Android TV Remote Service v2, which uses an on-screen pairing code. It does not implement the older v1 remote service. The TV’s actual service and firmware matter more than the year on the box.
First, identify the TV operating system
Open the TV’s About or System information screen and note the model, Android TV version and available system updates. A product described as an “Android box” may run generic Android rather than certified Android TV; a Google Cast receiver alone is not proof of a compatible remote service. A Sony BRAVIA can also offer Sony’s own network-control path, which is separate from Android TV pairing.
Use the Android TV and Google TV setup guide when the TV presents the expected code, or the Sony BRAVIA guide if the set exposes Sony’s IP-control option.
What each symptom tells you
| What happens | Likely stage | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| TV does not appear in the app | Discovery or missing compatible service | Confirm the TV is awake and on a reachable network; inspect its remote service and updates. |
| TV appears but no code is shown | Pairing service or TV setting | Do not keep entering a guessed code. Check the TV's current remote-control setting and service update. |
| A six-character code appears | Modern v2 pairing is available | Enter the code exactly as shown, including any letters A–F. |
| Code is accepted but buttons fail | Control session or unsupported command | Test arrows and Home first, then one other command. Record the exact failure. |
Try the fixes in a useful order
- Keep the TV on and verify the phone and TV can reach each other on your home network. A wired TV and Wi-Fi phone can share one local network.
- Check for the TV’s system and remote-service updates. Restart the TV after updating, then scan again.
- If a code appears, enter the current code. TV Remotely’s Android TV pairing expects six hexadecimal characters, so letters A–F are valid.
- If the TV exposes only an older v1 remote service, TV Remotely cannot pair through that protocol. Use the manufacturer’s documented control method or a compatible physical remote; manual IP entry cannot add a missing service.
- If you have a Sony BRAVIA, inspect its Sony network/IP-control setting. That is a separate route and may need a PIN or pre-shared key.
What this guide cannot verify from a model name
No fixed year splits all v1 and v2 sets. Firmware updates, TV maker changes and streaming boxes can alter which service is present. TV Remotely’s v2 implementation has been tested against simulated endpoints in the project, but no physical Android TV model is recorded as verified. A model listed as an Android TV target is therefore not a promise of successful pairing.
If the result remains unclear, report the exact model, firmware, whether the TV was discovered, and whether a code appeared. Do not post the code itself. For a TV missing entirely, use the discovery checklist; for a visible TV that refuses pairing, use connection troubleshooting.
