Troubleshooting

Android TV wireless debugging paired but not connected

adb pair succeeding only means the computer and TV exchanged keys. It doesn’t connect you. Wireless debugging uses two different ports: a temporary one for pairing and the one shown on the main Wireless debugging screen for the actual connection. Using the pairing port with adb connect is the most common mistake.

The two-port sequence

# 1. Pairing dialog open on the TV ("Pair using code")
adb pair TV_IP:PAIR_PORT
# enter the 6-digit code from the dialog

# 2. Close that dialog. On the main Wireless debugging screen read
# "IP address & Port" and use that port
adb connect TV_IP:CONNECT_PORT
adb devices

The pairing port and code are valid only while the dialog is open. The connect port changes when you toggle Wireless debugging or restart the TV, so read it each time. Use TV_IP, PAIR_PORT and CONNECT_PORT as labels for values on your screen, not as literal text.

Read the error

  • Connection refused: the address is reachable but nothing is listening on that port, so you probably used the pairing port, an old port, or Wireless debugging was switched off.
  • Timed out / No route to host: the computer can’t reach the TV: a firewall, guest network, client isolation or VPN.
  • adb pair prints success but adb devices is empty: no connect has happened yet.
  • more than one device/emulator: add -s TV_IP:CONNECT_PORT to your command.
  • pair command not found: platform-tools is too old; wireless pairing needs a current version (adb --version).

When the connection drops later

Wireless debugging commonly switches itself off when the TV changes networks or restarts. Turn it back on, read the new port and run adb connect again. You don’t need to pair again unless the TV forgot the computer. adb mdns services lists devices adb can discover; if the TV isn’t there but a direct adb connect works, discovery is blocked and you can continue with the direct address.
