Troubleshooting
TV picture freezes but sound continues
If the same video frame stays frozen while dialogue or other audio continues, the picture path has stalled even though audio is still arriving. First identify whether this happens in one app, one HDMI device, or every TV source. That distinction is more useful than immediately changing Wi-Fi, clearing every app, or resetting the television.

Confirm that it is a frozen frame, not buffering or a blank screen
A buffering spinner, repeated short pauses, a black screen, and a frozen image with continuing sound are different symptoms. Note whether the exact same frame remains visible, whether subtitles advance, whether playback controls respond, and whether the TV menu can still open. These observations do not diagnose a failed decoder or panel; they tell you which source path to test.
Pause playback, wait a few seconds, then resume once. If it is live television, briefly change channels and return only if that is safe for the program.
If motion returns and the issue is isolated to one channel or stream, the content or delivery path may be involved.
If that does not help: If the same frozen frame remains, note whether the app/device controls still respond; do not repeat rapid channel changes.
Open the TV home screen or menu while the problem is visible, then return to the same content if possible.
A normal menu suggests the display can still draw new images, so focus on playback, source, or signal processing.
If that does not help: If the menu also freezes or the TV stops responding, follow the manufacturer’s general TV-freeze support path for the model.
Compare another title in the same app, then another app or HDMI input.
One title or service points toward that stream or app; one external input points toward its connected device or cable; multiple independent sources make a TV-wide issue more plausible.
If that does not help: If you cannot access another source, record that limit rather than treating the untested branches as ruled out.
If it happens in one streaming app
When other apps play normally, avoid starting with the router or factory-resetting the TV. Check whether the frozen frame occurs on more than one title and whether it can be reproduced after exiting and reopening the app. If only one program is affected, report the title, timestamp, app version if available, and whether audio continues. A service-side stream or a specific encoding can produce a symptom that a TV setting cannot correct.
Close the affected app using the TV’s normal controls, reopen it, and test a different title or episode.
If only one title fails, keep the report focused on that title and service; other apps working is useful evidence.
If that does not help: If every title in the app freezes, check for an app update or service notice using the app provider’s current support guidance.
Restart the TV through its manufacturer-documented restart method, then repeat the same test once.
If the fault clears after restart, record that it was temporary; recurrence still warrants app/model-specific follow-up.
If that does not help: If it returns, avoid repeated resets. Capture the time, app, title, network connection type, and whether subtitles or controls continued.
If a cable box, game console, or streaming stick is the source
Check whether the TV menu remains responsive and whether another input plays normally.
A normal TV menu and a normal second input place the next checks on the connected device or its signal path.
If that does not help: If multiple inputs freeze in the same way, compare the TV’s built-in apps or picture test before assigning the cause.
Restart the external device according to its manufacturer’s instructions, then test the same content. Inspect that its power and HDMI connections are secure.
If restart restores motion, the device had a temporary playback issue; note how often it returns and which content triggers it.
If that does not help: If the image still freezes, try a different input or known-good cable only if convenient, changing one variable at a time.
Check the device’s own software and video-output guidance for its exact model.
A documented update or supported output adjustment may resolve a repeatable source-specific issue.
If that does not help: Do not change advanced format settings by guesswork. Give the device maker the TV model, connection path, and test results.
If the TV itself becomes unresponsive or several sources freeze
A TV-generated menu or diagnostic test is a useful comparison because it does not rely on the same streaming title or HDMI device. Follow your manufacturer’s self-diagnosis instructions if the model provides them. Samsung’s current picture troubleshooting groups freezing with picture problems and recommends checking software and using applicable tests. LG’s support material notes that a set-top-box or cable issue can cause intermittent picture freezing. Neither observation means every freeze has the same cause.
Use the TV’s normal restart or power-reset method from its manual; avoid unplugging during a firmware update.
If normal operation returns, test the same source and a separate source once to see whether the event recurs.
If that does not help: If the TV remains frozen or restarts repeatedly, stop cycling power and contact the manufacturer.
If available, run the TV’s picture/self-diagnosis test and note whether the test itself freezes or shows an error.
A normal test while one app/input freezes shifts attention toward that source; an abnormal TV test is a reason to contact the TV maker.
If that does not help: A test may not exercise every playback format or app, so a normal result does not prove all TV functions are fault-free.
What to include when reporting the freeze
- TV brand, exact model, software version, and approximate purchase region.
- Source path: built-in app, antenna/cable channel, HDMI port, and device model.
- Whether the same frame remains while sound continues, and whether subtitles, menus, or playback controls advance.
- Title/channel, time of occurrence, frequency, and whether restarting the source or TV changes it.
- Any recent app, TV, source-device, or connection change.
Do not open the TV or attempt internal-board repairs based on a frozen image. If the TV menu or diagnostic screen also stops updating, report that exact result and ask the manufacturer about service.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does the TV picture freeze while sound keeps playing?
- The video portion of a stream or source may stop updating while audio continues. Comparing another title, app, input, and the TV menu helps identify which path to investigate; the symptom alone does not name a failed part.
- Does this always mean the internet is slow?
- No. A freeze confined to one app, title, or HDMI device can occur without a general Wi-Fi outage. Check whether other independent sources play normally before changing network settings.
- Should I factory-reset my TV?
- Not as a first step. Compare sources, restart the affected app or device, and use the TV maker’s diagnostic guidance. A reset can remove accounts and preferences and may not fix a source-side problem.
