Troubleshooting
TV has sound but the screen is black
If a programme’s audio continues while the TV screen is black, start by asking whether the television can still draw its own menu or volume bar. That single observation helps divide the problem: a visible menu means the panel can show at least some graphics, while an invisible menu leaves a TV display or power issue in the picture.
Then separate the TV from any cable box, game console or streaming player. A black screen on one HDMI source does not establish that the TV itself has failed.

When the black screen comes from HDMI equipment
A cable or streaming device can continue sending audio while its video output or TV input fails. Check the selected HDMI input, confirm the connected device is awake, then reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. If another input or a second cable is available, change only one at a time so you can tell which check changed the result.
Restart the external box or console using its own normal power controls, then select its HDMI input again.
If its video output was stuck, the picture may return after the device starts cleanly.
If that does not help: If the TV menu works but this source remains black, test another source before changing TV picture settings.
Reseat the HDMI cable at the TV and source. If possible, try a different TV input or a known-good cable that supports the device’s signal.
If the picture returns after one change, the original input, cable seating or cable may have been involved.
If that does not help: If the source remains black on another input and cable, contact the maker of the external device. If multiple sources fail, return to TV-specific diagnostics.
If you use an AV receiver, connect the source directly to the TV temporarily only when that is practical and you can restore the original setup.
A picture directly connected to the TV narrows the issue toward the receiver’s input/output path or settings.
If that does not help: If direct connection also fails, continue checking the source and TV input; do not assume the receiver or TV is defective from one test.
When the TV menu is visible but apps or broadcasts are black
If a menu appears over the black picture, ask whether the blank screen follows a single programme, app or input. Sony’s screen guidance separates a blank display from problems limited to a broadcast source or connected AV device. Try a different channel or app, then reopen the original one. A single channel or service may have a signal or content problem even when the TV can display its interface.
If the TV offers a picture or self-diagnosis test, use the instructions for the exact model. A successful test helps show that the TV can render its own diagnostic image; it does not prove every input or backlight component works under all conditions. If the TV has no such tool, do not search for another brand’s menu path.
Restart the TV before considering a reset
Use the TV’s normal Restart command if the menu is visible. If not, follow the manufacturer’s model-specific power-reset instructions.
A restart can clear a temporary software or power state without erasing the TV’s accounts and settings.
If that does not help: If the screen stays blank, record whether sound continues, whether the menu appears and whether an indicator light flashes; then contact the manufacturer.
If the problem began after connecting a new device, disconnect that source and test a built-in menu or another source before reconnecting it.
If the picture returns with the new device disconnected, focus on its compatibility, cable and output configuration.
If that does not help: If the display remains black with all external equipment disconnected, use the TV maker’s no-picture guidance.
Know when the symptom points to service
If the menu never appears, several sources stay black, and the manufacturer’s restart or display test does not help, contact the TV maker or a qualified repair provider. If the TV menu is visible and only one external source is black, contact that device’s maker after checking its input and cable. Tell support whether audio continues, whether any overlay appears, which sources were tested and the model number. This evidence narrows the conversation without pretending to diagnose an internal part remotely.

Frequently asked questions
- Why can I hear the TV but see a black screen?
- The audio path can continue while the video path, selected input or external device has a problem. Check whether the TV can show its own menu, then test another source.
- Does a black screen with sound always mean the TV panel is broken?
- No. A connected box, input selection, cable or software state can also produce a blank picture. A menu/source comparison helps narrow it down, but only model-specific diagnostics or service can identify hardware faults.
- Should I factory-reset a TV with a black screen?
- Not as a first step. Try the manufacturer’s restart and picture checks first; a factory reset may erase settings and may not address a failed source or cable.
