Troubleshooting

TV picture suddenly black and white? Isolate the source and color setting

If a TV picture suddenly has no color, first compare its menus, built-in apps and other inputs. A grayscale accessibility setting can remove color from the screen, while a wrong source, component-cable connection or external device may affect only one input. Avoid resetting picture settings until you know whether the problem follows the TV or one source.

See whether the menus and every source are monochrome

Use the TV home screen, a built-in app and another input as simple comparisons.

  1. Open the TV menu over the affected picture.

If menus remain in color but the connected picture is monochrome, investigate the source or cable first.

If that does not help: If menus and built-in apps are also grayscale, check Accessibility and picture settings.

  2. Try a second input or built-in app.

If only one input is affected, the external device, selected input format or connection may be responsible.

If that does not help: Use the source device’s manual and test a known-good cable if available.

  3. Check whether Grayscale is enabled under Accessibility.

On supported Samsung TVs, Accessibility > Grayscale removes color from the whole screen. Other TVs have their own model-specific controls.

If that does not help: Turn it off only if it is not needed by the viewer.

Check component cables and external devices

Samsung’s guide notes that incorrectly connected component video leads can produce an incorrect color image. Match the green (Y), blue (Pb) and red (Pr) plugs to their labelled jacks; do not confuse red video with red audio.

Use the TV’s picture test if the issue affects every source

Some manufacturers offer a built-in picture test. Samsung documents a model/year-dependent Picture Test and recommends support if the test itself shows a color problem.

What to do next

Test another input and review grayscale/accessibility settings before treating a black-and-white picture as panel failure.

Frequently asked questions

Can an accessibility setting make the whole TV black and white?
Yes. Samsung documents a Grayscale accessibility option; availability and scope vary by model.
Why is only one HDMI input black and white?
The symptom may follow that source, cable or connection format. Test a second source and verify the cable/port before changing global settings.
Should I reset the TV picture settings?
Not first. Determine whether menus, apps and inputs are all affected; use the model’s picture test before resetting settings.
