Troubleshooting

Smart TV keeps restarting by itself

If your TV repeatedly restarts after reaching the home screen, note whether the loop began during an update, after adding an HDMI device, or during normal viewing. A recurring restart can come from software, connected equipment, power or a fault; the logo alone does not identify which. Try one manufacturer-approved restart and isolate attached devices before using reset or recovery controls.

Identify where the restart loop begins

A one-time restart after installing an update is different from a TV that keeps rebooting during use or setup. Sony’s BRAVIA guide offers a model-scoped soft reset and a separate “turns off or randomly restarts” branch. Roku has a separate recovery path for Roku TVs stuck restarting at the logo. Use the guide for the exact device that is restarting.

  1. Write down when the restart happens: before the home screen, while opening one app, after a fixed time, or when a device wakes.

A repeatable trigger helps distinguish an app or HDMI signal from a general startup fault.

If that does not help: If it happens at random, record the frequency and any status-light pattern.

  2. Check whether a TV or streaming-device update is actively installing.

A planned restart can occur as part of an update.

If that does not help: Do not remove power during an update unless the manufacturer instructs you to.

  3. Identify whether the TV or attached streaming box is the device restarting.

If only the box reboots and the TV stays on, use the box maker’s instructions.

If that does not help: If the TV itself powers off or restarts, continue with the TV maker’s support page.

Check HDMI devices and external power safely

A connected set-top box, console or soundbar can send HDMI-CEC power commands. LG documents linked power behavior; their menu paths and device support differ. Temporarily test the TV with nonessential HDMI accessories disconnected only when the maker’s instructions allow it. Also inspect the power plug and outlet without opening the TV.

  1. Turn the TV off and disconnect one nonessential HDMI device at a time, then observe whether the restart returns.

If the behavior stops with one device disconnected, its power-sync or HDMI-CEC setting may be involved.

If that does not help: Reconnect devices one by one and check their manuals; do not disable unrelated features without recording the original setting.

  2. Check that the TV power cable is firmly connected to a known working outlet, following electrical safety guidance.

This rules out a loose external connection.

If that does not help: If the plug, cord or outlet is hot, damaged, smells burnt or sparks, stop using it and contact qualified service.

  3. Check timers and automatic power settings if the TV stays on long enough to reach its menus.

A timer may turn the TV off, though an actual reboot loop needs further checks.

If that does not help: If the TV immediately restarts before menus load, use the model’s startup recovery guidance instead.

Use model-specific restart and update guidance

If the TV remains stable long enough, check manufacturer software updates and the exact restart support article. Avoid factory reset as the first response. If a restart loop prevents access to settings, do not try undocumented button sequences or copy recovery instructions from another brand.

  1. Use the maker’s documented soft restart for the exact model, once.

If a temporary state caused the loop, the TV may return to normal startup.

If that does not help: If it repeats, stop repeating the same action and collect model and status-light information.

  2. Contact the manufacturer if the loop persists, began during a failed update, or the set cannot reach its home screen.

Support can choose recovery based on model and firmware.

If that does not help: Tell support what was connected and which isolation checks you performed.

What to do next

Separate an actual restart from a short standby/wake or app reload, then record timing and connected-device behavior before changing settings.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my TV keep restarting by itself?
Possible causes include an update, connected HDMI-CEC device, timer, power connection, software or hardware issue. Record the trigger and use model-specific guidance.
Should I unplug a TV that is restarting during an update?
Do not interrupt an update unless the manufacturer explicitly says to. Use the exact model’s stuck-update instructions if progress does not continue.
Is a TV stuck on the logo the same as repeated restarting?
Not always. A logo loop may be one form of restart failure, but a TV that reaches the home screen and later reboots is a different symptom. Identify the stage and device.
