Troubleshooting

Roku voice remote won’t pair? Put both devices in pairing mode

A Roku voice remote must pair wirelessly with a compatible Roku player or Roku TV before all its features, including voice search, work. Put the Roku device and remote into pairing mode at the same time. First confirm that the remote actually has a voice button; a simple IR remote does not pair this way.

Check which Roku remote you have

Roku identifies voice remotes by a microphone or magnifying-glass voice button near the purple directional pad. A simple remote has no voice button.

  1. Look for the voice button near the directional pad.

This tells you whether the remote supports Roku voice features.

If that does not help: If there is no voice button, check the remote model and Roku device compatibility before attempting pairing.

  2. Keep the remote close to the player or TV while pairing.

Roku recommends putting both into pairing mode together.

If that does not help: If a soundbar/receiver is involved, leave it alone during remote pairing; this procedure concerns the Roku remote-to-player connection.

Pair the remote and Roku together

Roku documents different pairing steps depending on whether the remote has a pairing button. Use one documented method and wait for the on-screen confirmation.

  1. If another remote or Roku mobile app works, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue.

This puts the Roku device into pairing mode from its menus.

If that does not help: Without another control method, restart the Roku device by unplugging power, waiting at least five seconds, then plugging it back in.

  2. Hold the remote pairing button for five seconds until its status light flashes.

The pairing button is on the back or under the battery cover on remotes that have one.

If that does not help: For remotes without it, hold Back and Home together for five seconds until the light flashes.

  3. Wait for the TV confirmation.

A successful pairing restores the remote’s wireless features.

If that does not help: If the process fails, restart the Roku, check fresh batteries and repeat with both devices in pairing mode at the same time.

If pairing still fails

Roku advises checking interference, obstacles and distance. You can use the Roku mobile app as a temporary control if the player is already available on your network.

Check compatibility before replacing the remote

Find the Roku device model under Settings > System > About, or on its label. Compare it with Roku’s current voice-remote requirements before purchasing a replacement; a voice button does not make a remote compatible with every old Roku device. Roku’s list also separates language support from device support.

What to do next

Pair the Roku voice remote and Roku device in the same setup window; use the exact remote’s documented buttons.
