Troubleshooting

Roku TV reports a network connection error

A Roku network error can mean the TV cannot join the router or that it joined but the router has no internet. Run Roku’s connection test and read which result failed before changing Wi-Fi or resetting the TV. The TV can still use HDMI and over-the-air sources while offline.

Read Roku’s connection-test result

Roku’s test checks whether the device reaches the local network and whether that network can reach the internet. A Wi-Fi/router failure is different from a router-connected device with no internet. The Settings > Network > Check Connection screen may show separate checks or result text depending on model/region. Capture the exact message. If the TV reaches the router but the ISP is offline, changing Roku’s saved password will not help; if it cannot reach the router, focus on Wi-Fi name, password, signal, and access.

  1. Open Settings > Network > Check Connection and note each result.

A failed wireless link points to local association; a successful router link with failed internet points upstream.

If that does not help: If menu labels vary, use Roku’s current model manual and record the displayed text.

  2. Check whether a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi can load a site.

If multiple devices fail, the router/modem/ISP is a stronger lead.

If that does not help: If only Roku fails, check its network setup and signal at the TV.

Reconnect to the intended network

If the Roku is disconnected or joined to an outdated network, go to Settings > Network > Set up connection and select Wireless or Wired. Roku states Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive; carefully check capitalization and similar-looking network names. If the SSID is missing, rescan and confirm it is being broadcast and within range. A hidden or guest network may have restrictions. Do not reset the TV to factory settings just because one Wi-Fi credential needs to be entered again.

  1. Select the intended Wi-Fi name and enter the current password, checking uppercase/lowercase characters.

A successful local connection should allow the Roku test to continue to internet access.

If that does not help: If it rejects the password, verify it on the router or another trusted device before trying again.

  2. If the network is missing, scan again and compare another device in the same room.

This checks whether the issue is local coverage or whether the TV cannot see the network.

If that does not help: If no networks appear, move closer temporarily or contact Roku/TV support if other networks are visible elsewhere.

Interpret weak signal and streaming symptoms

A Roku can be connected yet have a weak or unstable signal that causes buffering or app errors. Roku’s connection guidance differentiates signal quality from internet speed and recommends checking results, moving closer/removing obstacles, restarting equipment, or using Ethernet where supported. A connection test marked good does not guarantee every streaming service works; each service can have its own requirements or outage. If only one channel fails while other apps stream, contact that app provider rather than repeatedly resetting Wi-Fi.

  1. Check Roku’s network status/signal quality and compare streaming in another app.

A broad failure with poor signal suggests local network quality; one app failure suggests service-specific troubleshooting.

If that does not help: If network status is good but video buffers in only one service, check that service’s status and requirements.

  2. If convenient, test Ethernet or move the Roku temporarily closer to the router.

Stable playback on a wired or closer test narrows the issue to the wireless path.

If that does not help: Return the TV to normal setup and avoid purchasing equipment until the result is clear.

Restart before resetting network configuration

Restart the Roku device or TV through its documented System Restart menu or a normal power cycle, then rerun the connection test. A dedicated Roku Network Connection Reset is a separate option and requires setting up Wi-Fi again. Use it only after saving the network name/password and when the model’s menu provides it. A factory reset is broader and removes account/app configuration; it belongs at the end of Roku’s troubleshooting, not as the first response to a network error.

  1. Restart from Settings > System > Power > System Restart where available, then rerun Check Connection.

If the error disappears, a temporary network session may have been stuck.

If that does not help: If the same result returns, record it and proceed to router/ISP comparison.

  2. Use Network Connection Reset only if the Roku model’s official guide directs it for persistent network setup issues.

The device restarts and will need its Wi-Fi configured again.

If that does not help: Cancel if the prompt says Factory Reset or Reset Everything unless you intend to erase device setup.

Choose Roku, ISP, or app support

If other devices also cannot reach the internet, contact the ISP/router provider. If only the Roku has a red failure connecting to Wi-Fi across a known working network, contact Roku or the TV maker with its model and test result. If network tests pass but one app errors, contact that app. Record the Roku model/software, error text, signal status, and whether Ethernet or another network worked. Never post the Wi-Fi password or account credentials publicly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Roku TV without internet?
Roku says offline use can still include HDMI, cable, or over-the-air sources, while streaming and updates require an internet connection.
What does it mean if Roku connects to Wi-Fi but not the internet?
The device may reach the router while the router/modem/ISP cannot reach the internet. Check another device and the Roku test before changing Wi-Fi credentials.
Should I factory reset Roku for a network error?
Not first. Run the connection test, reconnect, restart, and use a documented network-only reset if appropriate. Factory reset removes account/app setup.
