Troubleshooting

Google streaming remote menus work but TV volume or power fails

If a Google streaming remote navigates menus but cannot change TV power or volume, configure its TV buttons separately in Remotes and accessories. Aim it at the TV or sound system during the test; menu navigation and infrared TV control use different connections.

Menu navigation and TV control use different paths

If the remote moves around Google TV but cannot change the television’s volume or power, Google says the remote may not be sending infrared (IR) to the TV sensor. Bluetooth menu control working does not prove that the TV-control buttons were configured or that the IR path is working.

  1. Open Settings > Remotes and accessories > Set up remote buttons.

This is where Google says to configure the target TV, receiver or soundbar.

If that does not help: Choose the device whose volume or power you want to control.

  2. Select Volume, Power or Input and run the on-screen button test for that function.

Google tests each control separately and warns that some device models are not controllable.

If that does not help: Point the remote at the target device during the test; if it fails, retry the manufacturer/device selection.

  3. Check the chosen sound output and the active HDMI input.

The configured volume target may be a receiver or soundbar rather than the TV itself.

If that does not help: Use another remote to verify the streaming device is on the selected input.

Know what the setup cannot guarantee

Google notes that its remote may not control power, volume or input on some models. The menu offers a compatibility test, not a guarantee for every TV or sound system. If reconfiguration still fails, check the device maker’s manual and use the TV or audio-system remote for that function.

What to do next

Configure and test TV power, volume, and input separately; Google TV navigation working does not prove IR control.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google TV navigation work if volume does not?
Navigation can use the streaming device link while TV power and volume depend on separately configured IR commands.
Will every television work with the Google TV power button?
No. Google explicitly says power, volume or input control may not work with some device models.
