Choose the right starting branch
Fire TV is already on a reachable network; Connect the phone there and use Amazon's app
Stick remembers an unavailable old network; Restore a supported network path or use a replacement remote
Initial setup or remote-detection screen; Follow the model's setup and replacement-remote procedure
App controls navigation but TV volume fails; Investigate equipment control separately
Amazon's mobile remote instructions require the phone and Fire TV to be on the same Wi-Fi network. That prerequisite matters before any on-screen code can help.
If the stick is already reachable
Open Amazon's Fire TV app, select the correct device and follow the connection instructions shown on the TV and phone. Confirm navigation works before changing the network. Then use the Fire TV settings to select the new network and enter its password.
After the stick joins the new network, move the phone there as needed and reconnect. Losing the app connection during the change can be expected because you moved the device it was contacting. Success means the Fire TV reports a network connection and the app moves its on-screen selection again. Amazon's network troubleshooting covers the device-side connection checks.
If it is offline, check replacement compatibility
Check the replacement remote against your exact Fire TV model. Amazon warns that its remotes are not compatible with every Fire TV device.
For a replacement when the original is unavailable, Amazon documents this sequence:
- Restart the Fire TV by disconnecting and reconnecting its power.
- Wait for the screen to report that it cannot detect the remote.
- Insert batteries into the compatible replacement remote.
- If it does not pair, hold Home for 10 seconds.
Follow the matching procedure for your model and remote. Amazon: pair a replacement without the original.
Once the remote works, use it to enter the new network details and finish setup. Keep it afterward so another router change does not leave you dependent on an offline app.
Treat alternative recovery routes as conditional
A supported Ethernet adapter can help only if your particular stick and its current setup state support that connection. Check Amazon's model documentation before buying an adapter. Connecting the television itself to Ethernet does not automatically connect a separate HDMI stick.
Restoring an old network name and password on a router you manage may let a previously configured stick reconnect, but this is a conditional network experiment, not a guaranteed setup procedure. A phone hotspot can add client-isolation and second-device complications. Do not rely on it as the only recovery route.
Avoid turning recovery into a larger setup task
Do not factory-reset the stick merely to change Wi-Fi. Resetting can remove saved settings while still leaving you without a controller. Do not enable ADB debugging to imitate Amazon's official app: that is a different workflow and itself needs on-device access.
The Fire TV hub explains controller choices. Once an app already controls the stick, use the replacement-remote pairing guide for that narrower job. If a confirmed compatible remote cannot pair, contact Amazon with the model and exact screen reached.
