How to enable ADB debugging on Fire TV for a remote app
TV Remotely controls a Fire TV through ADB (Android Debug Bridge) over your home network. ADB is off by default, so you turn it on once with a working remote and then approve the app on the TV. These steps apply to Fire OS devices; Amazon devices running Vega OS do not have ADB.
Step 1: Find Developer options
Open Settings → My Fire TV. If Developer options is listed, go to step 2.
On many current models it is hidden. Open About, highlight your device name (for example, Fire TV Stick 4K) and press Select about seven times until the TV says you are a developer. Go back and Developer options appears. Menu wording varies by software version.
Step 2: Turn on ADB debugging
In Developer options, turn on ADB debugging and confirm the warning. You do not need “Apps from unknown sources” for a remote app; leave it off unless you need it for something else.
Step 3: Connect and approve the app
- Put your phone on the same home network as the Fire TV.
- Open TV Remotely and select the Fire TV.
- Watch the TV for a debugging prompt. It asks whether to allow debugging and shows a key fingerprint. It may mention USB even though the connection is over Wi-Fi.
- Tick “Always allow from this computer” if you want the phone remembered, then select OK.
Fire TV still will not connect?
| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| The app says ADB debugging is off or not authorised | Check that ADB debugging is still on, then reconnect and accept the prompt. Software updates can turn it off. |
| No prompt appears on the TV | Keep the TV awake on the Home screen and try again. Restart the Fire TV if an earlier prompt was dismissed. |
| You selected Cancel by mistake | Connect again to get a new prompt. |
| The Fire TV is missing from the list | Use the discovery checklist or connect by IP address. |
| There is no Developer options menu at all | The device may run Vega OS, which TV Remotely cannot control. |
Keep ADB debugging safe
An approved ADB connection can control the Fire TV and install software on it. Approve only devices you recognise, and never select OK on a prompt you did not start.
Use ADB only on a trusted home network. Do not forward port 5555 on your router or use port-forwarding apps that open it to the internet. To stop all ADB access, turn ADB debugging off again; you can turn it back on later.
Next steps
Read the Fire TV remote page for what the app can do once connected. If your remote is already lost and ADB was never enabled, start with the lost TV remote guide. Report a Fire TV model that will not connect through support.
