Troubleshooting

TV software update will not finish

A TV update that appears stuck may still be installing, or it may have failed during download. Identify the stage before touching the power: interrupting an active firmware install can make recovery harder.

Published by TV Remotely · Source checked 2026-10-24. Model and firmware behavior can differ; device tests are named only where performed.

Identify which update stage is stuck

‘Update stuck’ can mean the TV cannot find an update, the download percentage does not move, an error appears before installation, or the screen shows an installation/restart indicator. The remedy differs. A TV may restart and take longer than usual while installing software; Sony explicitly warns not to turn off or disconnect power during installation for its documented update procedures. If an active progress screen is still changing or the maker’s stated update window has not passed, leave the TV powered and wait.

  1. Record the exact message, percentage, indicator behavior, and how long it has been unchanged.

This distinguishes an actual error from a long but progressing installation.

If that does not help: If the screen is blank or there is a safety concern such as smoke or burning odor, stop and contact service.

  2. Identify whether the file is being downloaded, installed, or verified/restarted.

Download failures can point to connectivity; an installation indicator means power interruption may damage recovery.

If that does not help: If the stage is unclear, check the model manual or support page before power cycling.

  3. Check the exact TV model’s documented update duration and interruption warnings.

The safe waiting period differs by manufacturer, file size, and method.

If that does not help: Do not use another model’s time estimate as a reason to unplug a TV mid-install.

For a download failure, check the update path

A menu-based update needs a working route to the manufacturer’s update service. Sony lists connection/server errors and unstable internet as possible causes of an incomplete download and recommends checking network status. Confirm the TV can reach other online services, then run its own network test if available. If the update server is temporarily unavailable, repeatedly restarting the TV will not fix that service path. Try again later or use an official alternate method only if the model’s support page provides it.

  1. Check whether online apps and the TV’s network status work before retrying the download.

If the TV is offline, the update cannot reliably fetch its package.

If that does not help: Repair the TV’s network connection using the model guide, then retry once.

  2. If ordinary internet works but only the update check fails, note the message and retry later.

This separates general connectivity from an update-service or model-eligibility issue.

If that does not help: Contact the manufacturer with the model and error if the same service error continues.

Check space and exact model eligibility

A download or installation may fail when storage is short, even if the TV has internet. Sony documents a minimum free-space check for a specific update error on supported models; that number is not universal. Inspect the exact TV’s available storage when the update error mentions space, and use opportunity 064 for safe cleanup. Verify that the update is offered for the exact model and sales region. A similar model number or a file for another region is not a safe substitute.

  1. If the update message names storage, check available space using the TV maker’s path.

A low figure supports the storage branch and can be addressed by removing known unused apps.

If that does not help: Do not assume a numeric minimum from another model applies to this TV.

  2. If using USB, download the firmware only from the exact model/region support page and follow its required drive format and file placement.

Model-matched packages reduce the risk of using incompatible software.

If that does not help: If the update page does not offer USB installation for this model, do not force a package from another device.

If installation is underway, protect the update

During an active firmware installation, the TV may be unusable, restart, or show an update icon while files are written. Sony says not to unplug during its documented firmware process. Samsung likewise instructs users not to turn off the TV until its update completes. Keep the TV on the power source specified by its manufacturer, do not repeatedly press buttons, and wait through the expected restart. If there is a genuine outage, wait until power is stable before attempting the model’s recovery process.

  1. Keep power connected while a documented installation/progress state is active.

This avoids interrupting a write that may leave the TV unresponsive.

If that does not help: If power was already lost, do not repeat random button combinations; use the exact model recovery instructions or contact support.

  2. After the TV returns to normal, check the installed software version once.

A version change confirms completion; a repeated offer may mean the update did not install or another package remains.

If that does not help: If the version is unchanged and an error recurs, report the update method and version rather than restarting indefinitely.

Use USB recovery only when the maker documents it

Some models support USB firmware updates, but each manufacturer specifies exact download files, drive format, folder/file names, and steps. Sony warns its supported update must not be interrupted and identifies cases where USB is an alternate route; those procedures do not generalize to all TVs. USB updates can be irreversible or may prevent returning to an older version. Keep a record of the current version and follow the exact page from start to finish.

Before trying USB, confirm the page matches the full model code and region, and that the manufacturer says this update can be installed by USB. This prevents applying an incompatible package.

Contact support when the update screen stays unchanged beyond the official guidance, the TV cannot restart normally, or the same model-specific error repeats. Provide the full model, region, current software, update method, error text and duration. Do not factory-reset or interrupt firmware without the maker’s instruction.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a TV to restart during a software update?
Some models restart and take longer than usual while installing. Follow the exact update instructions and keep power connected during the installation stage.
Should I unplug a TV when an update percentage is stuck?
Not while the manufacturer indicates installation is in progress. First determine whether it is downloading or writing firmware, then follow the model-specific recovery guidance.
Can I install firmware from a similar TV model?
No. Use only a package the manufacturer provides for the exact model and region.
