Troubleshooting

Why your phone TV keyboard works in one app but not another

Phone keyboards work with TV remotes only when the TV app asks for text in a way the platform recognises. That is why typing can work in the TV’s own search and fail inside one streaming app. The remote connection is fine; that particular app doesn’t use the standard text field. Compare two fields before changing anything.

Compare two fields

  1. Open a search box on the TV’s home screen and select it with the phone remote.

A keyboard prompt appears on the phone and typing works.

If no prompt appears anywhere, the remote app may not support typing for this TV.

  2. Open the failing app, focus its field and try again. Don’t type a password yet.

You see whether the app’s field triggers the phone keyboard.

If nothing happens, the app uses a custom on-screen keyboard.

  3. Check whether a different field in the same app (search vs. sign-in) behaves the same way.

Search works while sign-in doesn’t, or the reverse.

Password fields are often handled differently on purpose.

Ways around it

  • Sign in from your phone: many streaming apps (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube and others) show a short code or QR code and ask you to complete sign-in on a phone or computer. This avoids typing on the TV entirely.
  • Autofill: Android TV and Google TV can use Autofill with Google to fill saved logins. Look under Settings for Passwords and autofill.
  • Voice search: if the remote has a microphone, say the title instead of typing it.
  • The app’s own phone companion, where the streaming service provides one.
  • A Bluetooth or USB keyboard connected to the TV. It works in most fields that accept text from a keyboard.

What the platforms document

Google documents keyboard input for compatible Chromecast and Google TV Streamer devices. Amazon’s Fire TV app has a keyboard option in its menu. Neither promises that every third-party app accepts text from a remote.
