Google TV Basic mode: what works without an account or internet
Basic TV mode is available on supported televisions with Google TV built in. It permits tuner and external-input viewing without a Google Account, but disables app installation, casting, Assistant search and other signed-in features. Without internet, the TV also misses security updates.

What Basic mode is for
Basic mode is an optional setup choice on TVs with Google TV built in. It lets you use the tuner, cable or satellite service, other connected inputs, and a limited set of preinstalled apps without signing into a Google Account or connecting the TV to the internet. It does not turn a Chromecast dongle into an offline TV mode.
During initial setup, choose the Basic TV option if it is offered.
Google says this option is available only on some Google TV built-in televisions.
If that does not help: If you do not see it, the model may not offer Basic mode; consult that TV maker’s setup instructions.
Use the TV tuner or a connected HDMI input for viewing.
These local sources are among the documented Basic mode uses.
If that does not help: A streaming service may still need its own internet connection or sign-in.
Use only the apps already available in Basic mode.
Installing apps, Play Library, Assistant search and casting are unavailable in this mode.
If that does not help: If you need these features, switch to full Google TV setup.
Can I switch modes later?
If Basic mode is already set up, Google says you can select Set up Google TV from the home screen banner and finish setup with the Home app or remote. The reverse is not a simple toggle after full Google TV setup: Google says returning to Basic mode requires a factory reset, which erases device data and settings.
Basic mode without internet also misses important security updates. Consider that tradeoff before choosing it for a permanently connected smart television.
What to do next
Choose Basic mode only if its limited apps and lack of internet security updates fit your use; switching back can require reset.
