Troubleshooting

Fire TV remote won’t pair? Check distance, batteries and limits

A Fire TV remote should pair automatically when batteries are inserted and the device is on, but Amazon documents a sequence for a “Pairing failed” message or an unresponsive new remote. Keep the remote within 10 feet of the Fire TV device, use fresh batteries, then hold Home to enter pairing. Exact reset sequences vary by remote generation.

Try the low-risk pairing checks first

Amazon recommends placing the remote within 10 feet (3 metres), reinserting batteries and holding Home until an on-screen prompt appears.

  1. Confirm the Fire TV device is powered and the TV is on the correct HDMI input.

The remote cannot complete pairing with a device that is not ready.

If that does not help: If the Fire TV is not visible, use its power and HDMI troubleshooting guidance first.

  2. Stand within 10 feet and hold Home for about 10 seconds.

Amazon says a prompt such as “Press Play/Pause to start” should appear.

If that does not help: If no prompt appears, remove the batteries for 30 seconds, reinstall them, and try again.

  3. Replace both batteries with a fresh compatible pair.

Amazon recommends fresh alkaline batteries for best performance.

If that does not help: If the remote still will not pair, continue with model-appropriate reset steps.

Reset only with the instructions for your remote

For most current Fire TV remotes, Amazon’s reset sequence is: disconnect Fire TV from power and HDMI for 60 seconds; hold Left, Menu and Back for 12 seconds; release and wait five seconds; remove the remote batteries; reconnect Fire TV and wait for the remote-detection message; reinstall the batteries and press Home. Hold Home for 10 seconds if pairing has not started.

Basic Edition and Alexa Voice Remote (1st Generation) use different button sequences. Use the matching section of Amazon’s Reset Your Fire TV Remote page; do not apply the common sequence when your remote type is different.

Check controller and device limits

Amazon says a Fire TV can have seven controllers paired; remove one before adding another if the limit is reached. The Fire TV app may provide another pairing path for supported devices.

What to do next

Check power, distance, and controller count before using the model-specific Fire TV reset sequence.
