Find a TV’s model number and software version

The screen size and brand are not enough to identify the right troubleshooting instructions. Find the full model code and installed software version in the TV’s own information screen, then use the code to open the exact manufacturer manual and support page.

Find the model code on screen

Open the TV’s Support, About, Product Information, or TV Information page; labels vary. On Samsung, the official path is Settings > Support > About This TV on supported generations. LG documents different information-menu paths for newer and older webOS versions. Write down the complete model code, including suffixes; the letters/numbers can identify size, year, tuner, or sales region. Do not shorten it to a family name when looking up firmware or compatibility.

  1. Use the TV’s settings menu to open About/TV Information and copy the full model code exactly.

A complete code gives support the model-specific product identity.

If that does not help: If the menu is inaccessible, look for the manufacturer label on the rear panel or original box.

  2. Photograph the label if the TV is wall-mounted rather than pulling or tilting the set alone.

A photo avoids transcription errors and reduces the need to move a heavy display.

If that does not help: If accessing the label is unsafe, use the on-screen information or ask an installer for help.

Record the current software version

The About screen or Software Update screen usually shows the installed firmware/OS version. Record punctuation, build suffixes, and region identifiers if shown. A version number on a support website may use a different format or be intended for a different country, so compare only on the model’s official support page. Do not install a download merely because its version number is higher; the file must match the exact product and region and follow that maker’s instructions.

  1. Write down the current version before starting any update or reset.

A before/after comparison helps determine whether the update completed.

If that does not help: If no version is shown, use the manual’s documented information screen or ask support how to retrieve it.

  2. Check whether the official support page matches the full code and sales region.

This reduces the chance of applying instructions for a near-identical but incompatible model.

If that does not help: If the model suffix differs, stop and locate the correct page before downloading firmware.

Handle serial numbers and photos carefully

The serial number identifies an individual unit; the model code identifies a product type. Support may ask for both for warranty or service, but a public troubleshooting post usually needs only the model and software version. Avoid publishing a readable serial number, device IDs, MAC addresses, QR activation codes, or account email. If you send a photo to official support, crop unrelated room details and use the manufacturer’s private support channel.

Use the details to get accurate instructions

Search the manufacturer’s support portal by full model code and choose the manual for the TV’s sales region. Confirm the OS generation, model year, and feature labels before following instructions. Similar family names may share a casing but use different software or tuner. The model screen can also show an error/status code; copy it exactly, but do not infer a diagnosis from an undocumented number. Support can use the model/version pair to check update eligibility and known issue scope.

  1. Open the official support result and confirm the page header names your exact model or model family.

A matching manual supports the relevance of its menu path.

If that does not help: If no exact result appears, ask the manufacturer to identify it from the full code.

  2. Share model and version with the issue description, but keep the serial private unless warranty support requests it.

Support receives the technical context needed without unnecessary public identifiers.

If that does not help: If remote assistance asks for passwords or one-time account codes, use the manufacturer’s published security process.

If you cannot reach the information screen

If a TV is stuck at a logo or setup prompt, read the rear label or box and tell support the screen it reaches. If the TV is mounted, do not risk injury to access a hidden label. Some manufacturers also provide model-identification by serial through a private support interaction, but never post a full serial or account information on a public forum. Record only what is visible and mark unknown details as unknown rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find my TV model number?
Check the About/TV Information screen in Settings or the manufacturer label on the rear of the TV. Use the full code including suffixes.
Is the model number the same as the serial number?
No. The model code identifies the product type; the serial identifies an individual unit. Keep the serial private unless official support needs it.
Why do I need the software version?
It helps support and the manual determine which menu paths, features, and firmware apply to the TV currently installed.
