Troubleshooting

AV receiver blocks the HDMI picture

If a source connected through an AV receiver produces no picture on the TV, temporarily connect the source directly to the TV using the same source and a compatible HDMI cable. If direct connection works, the receiver’s selected input, output routing, supported format, or pass-through path becomes the focus. If it still fails, continue with the source and TV checks instead of assuming the receiver is at fault.

Map the source-to-receiver-to-TV path

An AV receiver has separate source inputs and a display output, and its on-screen menu may use a different path from video arriving from a connected player. Confirm which source device is plugged into which receiver input, which receiver output goes to which TV HDMI input, and which input the receiver currently selects. The TV and receiver can each show the right HDMI label while the receiver itself is on the wrong source.

  1. Select the receiver input physically connected to the source, then select the TV input connected to the receiver’s monitor/display output.

If the source image appears, the receiver was routed to a different input/output selection.

If that does not help: If no image appears, note whether the receiver’s own setup menu or logo is visible on the TV.

  2. Inspect the receiver’s manual for the correct HDMI OUT/Monitor Out port and supported pass-through mode.

The selected output should match the TV connection, and the receiver should be configured to pass the source’s video signal.

If that does not help: If the menu or port labels do not match the manual, stop changing assignments and contact receiver support.

Bypass the receiver for a diagnostic comparison

  1. Turn off the source and TV if the manuals recommend it, then connect the source directly to a TV HDMI port known to work.

If a picture appears directly, the source can provide a signal and the failure lies somewhere in the receiver path or its configuration.

If that does not help: If direct connection also shows no picture, return to the HDMI source guide and test the source, TV input, cable, and supported signal mode.

  2. If direct works, reconnect through the receiver and test the same content, resolution, and TV port.

A repeatable difference between direct and routed operation gives receiver support a useful reproduction case.

If that does not help: If the symptom does not recur, record the original mode and connection; an intermittent handshake may not be explained by one successful test.

Check whether the receiver passes the signal format

An HDMI receiver is not guaranteed to convert every analog video input to HDMI output or pass every digital format. Sony documents model-specific receivers that do not convert composite/component video to HDMI, and it recommends checking receiver pass-through and input matching when a source is routed through an AV receiver. For 4K/HDR, the TV, source, receiver, and cable must all support the particular signal mode. Check the manuals rather than assuming the receiver is a transparent cable.

  1. Identify whether the source is connected to the receiver by HDMI or by an analog connection, and check the receiver manual for conversion or pass-through support for that type.

If the receiver does not convert that analog input to HDMI, use the documented matching output or connect the source directly to the TV.

If that does not help: If the manual is unclear, contact the receiver maker with the input/output types before buying adapters.

  2. For a high-resolution source, compare the source’s selected resolution/HDR mode with the receiver’s supported input and output modes.

If a lower supported mode passes while the target mode does not, the receiver’s format capability or setting is a plausible limit.

If that does not help: Do not disable protection or use unofficial firmware. Ask the manufacturer whether a documented firmware update or mode setting applies.

  3. Check the receiver’s selected HDMI output if it has more than one and verify which output is connected to the TV.

A signal sent to a second display output can leave the connected TV without the expected image.

If that does not help: If the output is correct but no receiver menu appears, follow the receiver maker’s HDMI-output diagnostics.

Check cables and device negotiation without changing several variables

If the receiver GUI is also missing, the issue may involve the receiver-to-TV cable, TV input, output selection, or HDMI communication. Denon recommends testing the HDMI output cable directly, checking another TV input, and comparing another display when available. A good test changes one link at a time so you can see whether the failure follows the cable, receiver, or TV input.

  1. Reseat the receiver-to-TV HDMI cable and verify that it is connected to the receiver’s documented monitor output.

A stable receiver menu after reseating suggests the display connection was not fully established.

If that does not help: Try a known-good cable appropriate for the desired format, keeping the source/input unchanged.

  2. Try another TV HDMI input and select it on the TV; if convenient, test the receiver with a different display.

If the receiver fails across displays and cables, report the receiver output behavior; if only one TV port fails, report that port-specific comparison.

If that does not help: Do not test with unsupported formats or purchase equipment solely to run a cross-check; use what is available and share the limits with support.

Choose the right support contact

  • Source works directly on the TV but not through the receiver: receiver maker, with the exact source format and input/output ports.
  • Receiver menu works but one source does not: source output or receiver input selection, then source maker if it also fails directly.
  • Several sources and receiver menu fail on one TV input: TV maker, with a known-good source/cable comparison.
  • Analog source is routed through HDMI and no picture appears: receiver manual/support to confirm whether that model converts the signal.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my source work directly but not through my AV receiver?
The receiver may be on the wrong input, using the wrong monitor output, or may not pass the source’s selected video format. Compare the same source and mode directly with the routed setup.
Can an AV receiver convert composite video to HDMI?
Not every model can. Check the receiver’s manual for the exact analog-to-HDMI conversion behavior and supported output connections.
Should I replace the receiver if its GUI does not appear?
Not before checking the receiver output, cable, TV input, and another supported display/input if available. Give the receiver manufacturer those test results before deciding on service or replacement.
